Steps to saving electricity without spending a cent
- Reduce your electricity usage by switching off lights and plug points – basically anything that draws a current and isn’t in use
- Avoid using the hot water tap wherever possible – e.g. wash hands in cold water
- When showering, have the water off while washing your hair and soaping your body (same concept when brushing your teeth)
- Set your geyser thermostat down
- Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible. As much as 85% of the energy used to machine-wash clothes goes to heating the water
Steps to saving electricity by spending R1500 – R3000
- Install a Geyser Controller, recommend the Mr Power brand, as it checks the current during the pre-programmed time period, which means it switches off the circuit at the optimum time (no guesswork involved)
- Replace your showerhead with a water efficient alternative such as the SatinJet showerhead from Mr Power
- Change your down-lights to Mr Power’s LEDs as they are locally manufactured and available as dimmables – plus draw 10% of the energy of regular down-lights
- Invest in a clothes dryer that doesn’t use electricity
- While most people are aware of a geyser blanket to assist with insulation, the lagging of the hot water outlet pipe is just as important as this is where much of the heat losses occur
Steps to saving electricity with a skys-the-limit budget
- Install solar geysers (there is also a solar Geyser Controller available from Mr Power)
- Install a heat pump
- Solar panels or Photovoltaic (PV) is a solution to use the sun’s power for electricity
- Investigate and invest in a Grid Tie Inverter – no batteries required and can be very effective
