Fortune smiled once again on Cape Media Corporation, the publishers of Energy Forecast amongst many others in its stable, at the 2013 Tabbie Awards, when the top South African business-to-business publisher came home with two golds, two silver, one bronze, and numerous other awards – 13 accolades in total.

In pride of place was the most recent addition to the Cape Media stable, Harvest SA, awarded Gold: Best Single Issue for its second issue. Judges commented: “Harvest SA is packed full of useful information that is packed into an easy-to-read and colourful format. The issue is simple to navigate and beautifully laid out.”

The award-winning team consists of Tracee Harvard (editor), Charlie Kershaw (design), Brent Meder (art director), Lindsay King (managing editor) and Francesca van Rooyen (production manager).

Also earning gold was Leadership magazine, taking top honours in the Opening Page or Spread category. The article, “Looking at Obama” was the collective effort of Tariq Cassim (design), Brent Meder (art director), Lindsay King (editor) and Francesca van Rooyen (production manager).  Judges remarked: “Bold image that grabs the reader's attention! I love the simple type in a bold colour! Nice use of a closely cropped photo, makes for a striking layout.”

Leadership was also the Silver winner in the Feature Article category. Miriam Mannak's soul-searching piece on the Marikana incident, “Sleeping with their enemy?” was described by the judges as follows: “This masterfully written and compelling feature ventures to where few features dare to journey: To a recent massacre in its own country. The reporting and research are superb. The story brings the tragedy to life but goes beyond just a news rehash.”

Further accolades for Cape Media publications were Silver in the Digital Imagery category for The Project Manager, and Bronze in the Front Cover Photograph category for Ubuntu.

The Project Manager team of Tariq Cassim (design), Brent Meder (art director), Simon Capstick-Dale (editor), Lindsay King (managing editor) and Francesca van Rooyen (production manager) were praised warmly for their image, “Weathering the storm”: “Excellent job combining all of the elements together. It looks as if the shoot took place just as you see it. The overall colour scheme is strong and the composition and placement of the subject is strong as well. There's a lot going with this layout, but the attention to detail makes it a standout.”

The Ubuntu team – Travis Arendse (design), Brent Meder (art director), Tracee Harvard (editor), Lindsay King (managing editor) and Francesca van Rooyen (production manager) – struck a chord with their front cover photo: “The image used is very powerful. The colour scheme works well to set the tone and feel of the story. Overall, a strong photograph for a compelling story.”

Reacting to the announcement of the awards, Cape Media managing director Robert Arendse said, “It is truly gratifying that our investment in quality content has been recognised. Business-to-business publishing is the bedrock of content marketing, and we are confident that our publications are fantastic platforms for the stakeholders of the various business communities we serve to communicate and advertise.”
